The carcasses of large pelagic vertebrates that sink to the seafloor represent a bounty of food to the deep-sea benthos, but natural food-falls have been rarely observed. These observations come from industrial remotely operated vehicle video surveys of the seafloor on the Angola continental margin. The carcasses supported moderate communities of scavenging fish up to 50 individuals per carcass , mostly from the family Zoarcidae, which appeared to be resident on or around the remains. Based on a global dataset of scavenging rates, we estimate that the elasmobranch carcasses provided food for mobile scavengers over extended time periods from weeks to months. No evidence of whale-fall type communities was observed on or around the carcasses, with the exception of putative sulphide-oxidising bacterial mats that outlined one of the mobulid carcasses. Using best estimates of carcass mass, we calculate that the carcasses reported here represent an average supply of carbon to the local seafloor of 0. Rapid flux of high-quality labile organic carbon in fish carcasses increases the transfer efficiency of the biological pump of carbon from the surface oceans to the deep sea. We postulate that these food-falls are the result of a local concentration of large marine vertebrates, linked to the high surface primary productivity in the study area.
There may be bigger fish to fry, but now small sprat are big on sustainability!
What difference does it make whether an angler catches one big fish or two smaller fish, each half its weight? Experts assumed that big and small fish invest the same proportion of their energy to make eggs. But a new report in Science by a Smithsonian biologist and colleagues shows that plus-sized females invest disproportionately more in the number of eggs and the size of individual eggs.
Therefore, taking a single big fish has a bigger impact on the fish population than taking multiple small ones.

Match Group, which houses a large portfolio of dating app brands — including most notably, Tinder, Match, and OKCupid — is prepping a notable upgrade to one of its older brands: Plenty of Fish. But it has since remained fairly quiet, in terms of the state of its business, and has been slow to roll out upgrades even as Tinder soared. For starters, POF is gearing up to launch a collection of new features designed to bring its app into the more modern age of dating.
In the near future, it will also include the ability to share GIFs in your conversations and add illustrations to photos, like doodles and stickers. Beyond simply updating the functionality and user experience to stay current and on-trend, the new additions are also meant to offer POF users ways to better personalize their interactions and connect. But not everyone wants to share their phone number with a stranger, which is where the voice calling option comes in. Instead of dialing a phone number, matches can call each other in the app.
Or for a middle-of-the-road approach between texting and calls, they could use the voice messaging feature instead. The app is the second largest U. And it claims to have the most conversations compared with other dating apps, with 2. They will be also be available on the mobile web and desktop later this year. It also just integrated with Google Home.

You may have had the chance to cross huge animals during your dives such as the Mola Mola 3 meters, the blue marlin 5 meters, the famous manta ray 5. The place where a river enters a lake , larger river, or the ocean is called its mouth. River mouths are places of much activity. As a river flows, it picks up sediment from the river bed , eroding banks, and debris on the water. The river mouth is where much of this gravel , sand , silt , and clay —called alluvium —is deposited.
When large amounts of alluvium are deposited at the mouth of a river, a delta is formed. These sediments form the flat, usually triangle-shaped land of a delta. The mouth of a river is often a good place for fishing. Along with the alluvium, a river flushes many different species into the lake or sea. Larger fish, knowing this, wait at the mouth of the river for an easy meal.

Yet when most people think of these cartilaginous fish, a single image comes to mind: a large, sharp-toothed and scary beast. That generalization does sharks a huge disservice, as they have far more variety than that. They range in size from the length of a human hand to more than 39 feet 12 meters long; half of all shark species are less than one meter or about 3 feet long.

To a lesser extent, and mainly in the Mid-Atlantic region, the scallop fishery uses trawl gear. Most vessels land scallops as shucked meats the adductor muscle but some vessels also land whole in-shell scallops. Implementing regulations are found at 50 CFR part subpart D.
Area closures and gear restrictions protect habitat that are affected by some kinds of trawl and dredge gear. Atlantic sea scallops may only be harvested from federal waters by vessels issued a federal scallop permit. Quotas for Atlantic sea scallop fishery change every year or every two years. Oily fish such as sprats can not only be a delicious and sustainably-caught source of wild protein and unsaturated fats, but their health, nutritional and well-being benefits, coupled with affordability, make them a true superfood.
MCS says the improved rating for Baltic sprat has come about because the fishing mortality has dropped to levels that are sustainable in the long term and is the first time fishing pressure has been below this level in over 20 years. The latest version of the MCS Good Fish Guide has also seen improved ratings for Irish Sea cod, haddock and plaice and hand-lined pollack from the south west.
North Sea cod and haddock from North Sea, West of Scotland and Skagerrak have also seen improvements due to the latest stock assessments showing increases in biomass.
